Water and Sun Safety

Summer is here! With kids out of school, parents want to make sure that their children are engaged and having fun during their time off. As we head outside for some fresh air and fun in the sun, there are certain sun and water safety recommendations to keep in mind.

As kids enjoy their time outside this summer, parents should be sure to apply plenty of sunscreen to their little ones. Be sure to apply sunscreen a half an hour before going outside, and reapply every two hours. When picking a sunscreen, it is important to look for labels with the phrase “broad spectrum” on it. This means the sunscreen protects against both UVA and UVB rays; the two types of light that affect our skin the most. A minimum of SPF 15-30 will provide enough protection for most children, but children with fairer skin will need a higher SPF. If your child does get a blistering sunburn, however, be sure to call your doctor.

Once your little ones have their sunscreen applied, you are ready to head to the water and beat the Louisiana heat. As the temperature rises, water activities become more and more popular. It is a good idea to designate a minimum of one adult to watch the pool, this way you can relax and enjoy the company, knowing your child is accounted for and safe.

If you are the parent of an inexperienced swimmer, I always recommend that you be within arm’s reach of them to make sure they are safe while still having fun in the pool. Parents of inexperienced swimmers may also want to enroll their children in swimming lessons to help them become more confident in the water and to give you peace of mind. Be aware, however, that swimming lessons do not make your child “drown proof,” and children should still always be watched in the water.

Further, floaties are not recommended because they give children, and sometimes parents, a false sense of security. For home pools, it is recommended that there be two barriers between the pool and children.

Stay safe and have fun!
