This fall, students enrolled in United States History at Parkview Baptist School experienced a hands-on and creative approach to learning about the United States Constitution and how it was drafted. Students in Mr. Williams’ US History class learned directly about the constitutional process by making their own class constitution, which they would abide by for the rest of the school year. In each class, students gathered in groups to propose “amendments” for consideration. Some amendments up for consideration included a guest teaching appearance by a student and “Meditation Monday” where the class gets five minutes to meditate every Monday. Mr. Williams had the option to veto amendments that he didn’t approve of, but the class could also override his veto with a 2/3 majority. At the end of the process, each class had its own class constitution, and according to Mr. Williams, a better understanding of “how to abide by the Constitution and how it has been implemented throughout history.”
