How terrifying would it be to lose your one method of communicating with others? For many Louisianians, this flood has placed them in that exact vulnerable predicament. Some individuals with unique needs require assistive technology to function in society around them. When that technology is lost or damaged, they are put in an extreme situation. LATAN is the organization that can supply relief.

LATAN, the Louisiana Assistive Technology Access Network, is reaching out to give support and resources to their clients and others affected by the recent flood. LATAN's partners have been reporting the needs of people in the shelters and the surrounding areas, and LATAN is providing access to temporary and permanent replacements of lost or damaged assistive technology (AT) and durable medical equipment (DME) to individuals with disabilities whenever possible. Local, state, and federal organizations have relied on LATAN to assist those living with disabilities with lost equipment and technology. Since the demand is large and the task is daunting, LATAN is responding to AT and DME requests as it can, despite limitations on funding, staffing, and capacity.

LATAN focuses on Louisiana residents with disabilities and works to provide access to AT and DME for inclusion, accessibility, independence, and safety. Not only does LATAN respond to disaster and crisis, but the organization is active in working towards preparedness and safety. LATAN is an active member of Louisiana Emergency Management and Disability Aging Coalition (EMDAC), and they work side by side with other local, state, and federal groups to discuss and solve problems that arise during emergencies.

LATAN wants to keep our people safe, independent, included, and functioning in their environments everyday, and especially after a disaster. LATAN is grateful for all of its partners and volunteers that help achieve that goal!

Also, LATAN will have a Shop Talbots night on Wednesday, September 14 from 5-7:30 p.m., where 10 percent of the proceeds pre-tax will go to LATAN’s mission. For more information on the Shop Talbots night, email mariay@latan.org.
