John Schilling Staley

John Schilling Staley, a fifth grader at St. James Episcopal, is known for his kind and loving heart, so it was a surprise to everyone when he discovered his heart was not working properly. While tossing the football in the backyard with his dad, John Schilling noticed “his heart felt weird.” In fact, he was experiencing supraventricular tachycardia (SVT), and his heart rate was up to 240 beats per minute. After several cardiologist visits, John Schilling had heart surgery to repair his congenital heart defect. He responded extremely well, and now he is beyond appreciative that he can run and play his favorite sports.

John Schilling is up to try any sport, and he enjoys playing golf, tennis, basketball, and swimming. When he’s not being active, he expresses his creativity. His dream is to be an architect and create beautiful buildings for the world. Since he is a fantastic mathematician, he will succeed for sure. John Schilling is also really into watching Star Wars movies. His parents have been showing him some classic action movies like Jurassic Park, which continue to fuel his creativity. In addition to movies and sports, he also loves to travel. His favorite recent adventures have been snow skiing in Colorado, sightseeing in New York, and playing on the beach in Florida.

Though everyone in his life commended John Schilling for his bravery and toughness throughout his diagnosis and surgery, John Schilling wants the world to know that he is so grateful for all the support he received. His unique love for every person really sets him apart. His father marvels at his focus on others’ feelings and desire for everyone to feel good around him. He may have been born with a different heart, but his kindness for others and perspective in life are what make him one amazing kid.
