I’m Not Here for Your Entertainment

Now that we are in the full swing of summer, my children drag themselves out of their rooms each morning, and before they even get the sleep out of their eyes, they ask…“What are we doing today?”

I don’t know how we fell into this trap of always needing something to do as if each day has to have a main event. I mean, why is hanging out around the house and playing with the who-knows-how-many toys we have not good enough? We have a TV in almost every room of the house, a great yard to play in, and still, this counts for nothing?

I think we have to stop feeling like we need to always have a plan for the day with some big activity and stop beating ourselves up over it if we don’t. With all of the entertainment, it seems that playing on the floor in a room is a thing of the past, and we need to let these children know that we are not here to plan their social lives and make sure they are having fun days every day.

So, here is my idea, bring home all the Amazon boxes from the office and get a roll of packing tape, scissors, and a pack of colors (multiply by the number of children you have), and lay it out on floor. When they ask what are we doing today, you say, “Going to the moon, but you have to build your rocket first.”

Sitting around the house is perfectly fine. I’m not here for your entertainment, and if anyone asks…we are chilling out around the house today.  #chillingathometoday ■
