Hallmark Channel, Take Me Away!

“Mom, are they going to kiss?!”

So, I admit it. Hallmark Channel movies have become a mainstay in my house. I know, I know, they are horribly cheesy. I even roll my eyes at them sometimes, but these wholesome productions are a great escape from the constant bad news and unyielding drama surrounding us.

In a house full of boys, movies where couples reunite after years apart or where they begin as enemies and end up in love are not popular. I’m often asked, “Are you going to watch another love movie?” Why, yes, yes I am!

I’ve discussed the predictability of these films with PMan, who tries to appear uninterested in yucky stuff like love. Thanks to my romantic intuition, everyone in the house now knows that they kiss in the last 30 seconds of the show and that there’s always a moment of doubt that gets swept away just in time for the computer-generated snow to fall. Ah. Is it this predictability that makes the movies the perfect answer to a chaotic world?

Now that fall has arrived, my guilty pleasure is pulling out all the stops. Every inch of every scene seems to scream it’s pumpkin time! The decorations, the outfits, the hair are all so ideal that for those brief moments everything does feel ideal. I’ve always loved fall, and Hallmark Channel reinforces that boot-wearing enthusiasm. And we’re not even talking about the Hallmark Christmas movies yet! (By the way, they’ve already started airing new mistletoe movies this year!)

If you’re tired of fighting with the kids about playing video games for a few more minutes or not in the mood to do another load of laundry, I recommend the year 2021’s version of a Calgon moment. Grab yourself some hot chocolate (or if you’re in Louisiana some chocolate ice cream) and settle in for a romcom. By the time that last-second kiss happens, you’ll be transported away!
