“IT CAME! Somehow or other, it came just the same!” How the Grinch Stole Christmas by Dr. Seuss

Most of us know the story of the green-faced Grinch who tried to stop Christmas in Whoville. The story is one of my favorite Christmas shows and one I faithfully watch each holiday season. I know each scene and sing along as the Grinch slithers through town, taking the Who’s goodies. But, never did I imagine that I would feel like I was actually living in Whoville on Easter.

As we rose for the day on Easter morning, the boys checked out their baskets of treats from the bunny. We planned a special meal. Although this year, it was for a considerably smaller crowd–four to be exact. And it was quite different logging on to YouTube to attend mass. However, in that moment, an incredible thing happened. Despite social distancing, economic challenges and an uncertain future, we were together and taking part in family traditions. Our little family of four had grown to be a little bit more. As we participated in mass, we could feel the connection to others who were sitting before their screens in their Who houses doing the same thing. Mass was different, but it was mass just the same.

As the boys hunted eggs, there was laughter and competition. The hunt had far fewer children, but the feeling of excitement was just the same. Traditionally, my family plans a fish fry to celebrate Easter together. There is plenty of food and everyone leaves satisfied. This year, we had a small, but special meal for four. No one left, but everyone was satisfied.

In these times of grim news and bleak statistics, we have to look a little harder to find the golden eggs. Thankfully, Easter came this year. No Grinch or virus could stop it from happening. Perhaps that’s because as the Grinch learned about Christmas, Easter “doesn’t come from a store. Perhaps (it) means a little bit more!”
