What's Happened in 30 Years?

We’re officially 30 this month! We’ve experienced a lot of excitement, growth and changes over the years, so we’re not surprising anyone when we say that a lot can happen in 30 years. But, what has happened in the last 30 years? Let’s take a look back together and remember the good times, the unfortunate hard times, and the times that will be catapulting us to a brighter future.

  1. LSU’s Joe Burrow wins the Heisman Trophy in 2019, becoming only the second Tiger to win the honor.
  2. Barack Obama became the 44th President in 2009, the first African-American to hold the office.
  3. Osama Bin Laden died in 2011.
  4. The World Wide Web officially went online in 1991.
  5. In August 2016, southeast Louisiana experienced historic floods.
  6. LSU Football won 3 National Championships and LSU Baseball won 6 College World Series.
  7. Steve Irwin, Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson, Prince, Tom Petty, Kobe Bryant and David Bowie all passed away.
  8. We’ve witnessed the COVID-19 pandemic.
  9. The September 11 attacks occurred in 2001.
  10. Facebook launched in 2004, and social networking expanded even further with the founding of Instagram in 2010.
  11. Hurricane Katrina devastated Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama in 2005, making it the costliest natural disaster in U.S. history.
  12. Spacecraft Pathfinder landed on Mars on July 4, 1997.
  13. The Deepwater Horizon oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico exploded in 2010.
  14. Baton Rouge turns 200 in 2017.
  15. The Internet meme was born in 1993 and has been filling our feeds with the funny images on all social media platforms ever since.
  16. The Berlin Wall fell in 1991.
  17. The 2005, 2014 and 2015 Miss USA pageants were held in Baton Rouge at the Raising Cane’s River Center.
  18. The New Orleans Saints won the Super Bowl in 2010.
  19. Walt Disney World closed its parks for only the seventh time in its history due to COVID-19. It’s also the longest the parks have ever been closed.
  20. The #MeToo movement took off.
  21. Netflix was founded in 2007 and Disney+ joined the streaming world in 2019.
  22. Social media “influencers” and YouTubers rose to fame.
  23. Gotta catch ‘em all! Pokémon Go got fans of Pokémon out into the world to catch them all in 2016.
  24. Minecraft, Fortnite, and Animal Crossing all gained massive followings.
  25. Snapchat was born in 2011, giving us all the filters we never knew we needed.
  26. Smartphones changed the game in how we communicate.
  27. Staying in other people’s homes is now cool with AirBnB.
  28. Diana, Princess of Wales died in August of 1997.
  29. The O.J. Simpson murder case had over 100 million people worldwide watching or listening to the verdict.
  30. Y2K was expected to cause extensive havoc as the year changed from 1999 to 2000.
