New Access/ABILITY exhibit at Louisiana Children’s Museum

This is a disability awareness exhibit showing that with or without disabilities, everyone is participant in the world. Visitors can test their senses and explore the world of the physically disabled as well as learn American Sign Language and test the wheelchair obstacle course. People can also try out the Multisensory City Walk, ride a hand-pedaled bike, create art that you can experience through sight, touch and sound and more. Dribbling for a cause

You don’t have to be a pro to hit the courts and play in this tournament. The Charles W. Lamar Jr. YMCA is hosting a 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament on Saturday, March 20th at Woodlawn Middle School. Children ages 10 and older are encouraged to round up a team of three to five players to participate. The tournament begins at 9 a.m. with check-in at 8 a.m. Registration is $50 for adults and $25 for children. Deadline to register is Wednesday, March 17th. Family night that offers a barrel of laughs

Don’t be surprised if you take the family for a fun night and your child decides they want to be a clown. Prepare to laugh along with Jean Saucier and Patrick Côté, the stars of Circo Comedia, as they perform acrobatic tricks, daredevil stunts, magic and juggling. Saucier and Côté will perform on Saturday, March 13th, 7 p.m. at BREC’s Independence Park Theatre. The fantastic duo are from Montreal, Canada and offer a unique fun family night full of laughs. Be Brave for kids

More than 8,000 children in Louisiana are currently in protective state care. Help improve the quality of life for these children by participating in this year’s Brave Heart Partee Fore Kids golf tournament on Monday, March 15th at Greystone Country Club in Denham Springs. There are two different tee times and offers a fun way to contribute to the 2010 Christmas project fund that provides more than 4,000 children Christmas gifts each year.  Cost is $125 per player or $500 per team. Participants have the chance to win a car and non-players can purchase a $20 golf ball online for a chance to win a cruise for two. Babysitter course for military families

Military children will have the opportunity to interact with one another and learn life-saving skills such as first aid and CPR training at the American Red Cross Ultimate Babysitter Camp on Monday, March 29th through Thursday, April 1st. The American Red Cross has joined with Louisiana Operation Military Kids to make this unique camp possible and to continue funding scholarships for military children, ages 11 to 15 years. The camp will allow children to learn about essential life skills and first aid methods. The camp is free to children with military parents and is limited to 20 spots. Taekwondo tournament

Board breaking, fighting and weapon performances—all scenes one can expect to see at this year’s Cajun Regional Tournament. Hosted by David Vincent’s Martial Arts and Fitness on Saturday, March 27th at the Paula G. Manship YMCA, competitions will be held for all age groups and ranks, beginning with the highest ranking Black Belts at 9 a.m. and ending with some of the youngest Taekwondo competitors, the Little Ninjas at 1 p.m. Team Maverick, David Vincent’s Martial Arts and Fitness Demonstration team, will perform a special Martial Arts demonstration at 10:15 a.m. A portion of the event proceeds will help fund scholarships for community youth to participate in athletic programs. Junior Master Gardner preview event

To complete certification in the Junior Master Gardener Program, participants must finish activities from the eight chapters of the program handbook. This free preview event allows children ages 7-10 to sample activities from each chapter to get a feel for the camp experience. The event is Sunday, March 21st, 1-4pm. Autism Awareness Walk and Fun Day

Help raise awareness about Autism Spectrum Disorder with this year’s Autism Awareness Walk and Fun Day on Saturday, March 20th. The day kicks off with the one-mile walk at 9 a.m. and activities such as music, clowns and face painting and food will follow. Registration required and is $20 for adults and free for children 12 years and younger. Individuals with ASD walk for free. A portion of the proceeds help fund the Resource Center for Autism Spectrum Disorders, a new program that will serve the Baton Rouge area. Prizes will be given to the top three biggest walking teams and the top fundraising teams and individuals. Volunteer and sponsorship opportunities are available. Spring fun in the Louisiana swamp

Join National Park Service rangers and celebrate Louisiana’s wild wetlands during a special weekend of outdoor fun Saturday and Sunday, March 27-28th, 10 a.m.-4 p.m at Barataria Preserve. Take a guided walk, try canoeing during a brief paddle with a ranger, meet underwater creatures via dip nets or explore the preserve on your own. Admission and all activities free. Cortana and Villa del Rey deliver “Valentines for Troops”

Troops serving overseas received a small piece “home” this past Valentine’s Day. Cortana Mall and the students of its adopted school, Villa del Rey, hand delivered handmade Valentine’s Day cards to representatives of the Armed Forces in Baton Rouge. Sgt. 1st Class Sonianica Watkins, Commander of the Cortana Army Recruiting Station, talked to the children about serving his country and how their messages will be happily received by the troops. 

 

Cinderella Project Dress Giveaway

Prom season—a night of glitz and glam a girl will remember the rest of their life. The Cinderella Project of Baton Rouge knows this and is gearing up for its 2010 Dress Giveaway to help more girl’s dreams come true. Before you go shopping, mark your calendar for April 10th-11th where Louisiana high school juniors and seniors in financial need of a prom dress or who are on the federal free or reduced-price lunch program will have the opportunity to browse for their magical dress. The dresses are free to those who qualify and proof financial need is not required, only a valid current high school identification card. The giveaway is 9 a.m.-5 p.m. on Saturday and noon-5 p.m. Sunday at the A.C. Lewis Branch of the YMCA in Baton Rouge. Students must check in at the door to receive a wristband and schedule a 30-minute shopping appointment for that day. Appointments are available on a first come, first served basis. Fun on the Farm

Food Processors Conferences

The LSU AgCenter Department of Food Sciences and the Louisiana Department of Economic Development will host the 6th annual Louisiana Food Processors Conference on March 17th-18th. Held at the LSU Energy, Coast and Environment Building, attendees can enjoy presentations from local and national speakers on topics related to the Louisiana food processing industry. There will also be a silent auction, trade show with about 30 booths and technical sessions that focus on food packaging and how to bring a food product to the marketplace.
