Choosing A Private School Checklist


When visiting the campus of a school you are considering, take along this checklist to help ensure you are covering all the topics that would affect your family

General

What are your hours of operation?

How often is mass? 

Does the school have a parent association so I can communicate with other parents?

What is the cost to attend the school? 

How would the school feel about my child having a Facebook account? Does your school prohibit or require students to have an account for communication? Does the school send information to students through Facebook? 

Is there a playground and/or gym area for the child to have recess? Are the gym’s locker rooms well-maintained?

Are the buildings maintained and in good physical condition?

What are the benefits of attending an all-girl or all-boy school? What are the benefits of attending a co-educational school?

What is the school’s history?

Does the school staff guidance counselors if my child’s needs assistance?

What type of sports program and extracurricular activities does the school offer?

Does my child have to be Catholic to attend the school?

What is the school’s discipline policy?

What is the school’s student race ratio?

What type of lunch program does the school offer?

Does the school offer a transportation program such as bus system or car pooling?

Does the school have a medical professional on campus for emergencies? 

Is the school located near my child’s residency? 

Does the school offer an after-school extended care program?

Curriculum 

What subjects do you offer aside from the basic curriculum?

Are computers offered to all students?

Does the school conform to a specific curriculum?

What electives does the school offer? Does the school offer enhancements such as are, music and physical education? Do specialists teach certain electives?

Does the school offer theology every year?

Does the school address the issue of sex education?

What textbook series does the school use and does it follow state GLE’s ? 

Does the school offer a handwriting program?

Are the textbooks included in my child’s tuition?

Does the school participate in yearly field trips?

Teachers

What is the student to teacher ratio?

How often do parent, teacher conferences occur?

Are all of the school’s teachers certified?

Does the school have a large teacher turnover rate? 

Classroom

How do your teachers communicate grades or behavior news to parents?

Are the classrooms in a safe, secure environment?

How many students are in the average classroom?

How long are the students inside before getting a recess break?

Are students placed in classes based on ability and intellect?
